  • KOReader version: 2023.06.1
  • Device: Kindle 4 Silver

Issue

I cant seen to find a way to enable the bottom menu on the K4. I've looked into the settings and user guide and all but no luck. I found an old thread from 2016 on how to enable Reflow and such and it seemed like a fix was merged but I still cant seem to either find Reflow or enable bottom menu. This is my first Bug Report so I apologize if I have made a mistake somewhere and I really appreciate any help. (Also sorry if this was supposed to be in Feature Request)

I switched to KOReader last week on a Kindle 4 NT. After looking through all the top menu items, I thought there was simply no way to change the font size. The DPI zoom is a workaround, but that messed up the UI in other places, so I was stuck with my too-small font. Only days later, I noticed a screenshot in the user guide with the bottom menu but found no way to activate it. I thought it was a touch device only feature.

Anyway, a long-winded explanation to ask if maybe we could explain how to open the bottom menu on non-touch devices in the user guide?

The first questions is: how to open the bottom menu on non-touch devices? :)
And only Kindle 4 NT users may know how it is done on that device. Or @comphilip , who implemented/enhanced the Non-Touch support.
(On the emulator, it is done with just hitting Enter.)

Once we have an answer, the second question if maybe we could explain that in the user guide? will obviously have a positive answer, and only then @offset-torque can play :)

FWIW, pressing on the five-way button is bound to Enter, IIRC, so, I'm assuming: just press the big button ;).

Sorry for the delayed reply, I was away from computers. I will add this info the guide.

Is there anything else I should add to the guide related to these non-touch screen/kindle devices? I have never ever seen one in real life so I don't know what is missing in the guide related to them.

Support for non-touch devices is generally quite good thanks to @onde2rock, but the minimum to be properly usable with our UI is something like back, menu, arrows, enter. Some workarounds have been introduced for devices lacking a back button, but it's far from ideal (#4029 (comment)).

It is better adding keyboard navigation to user guide. I collected them before: https://comphilip.wordpress.com/2022/03/25/keyboard/

It helps Non-Touch devices with keyboard (Kindle 3, Kindle DX, Android, Android TV) and hopes also to devices with few keys.

https://github.com/koreader/koreader/wiki/Gamepad-support also depends on the same mechanisms

Thanks for compiling the keyboard shortcuts and mentioning it here @comphilip.
I added them to the guide for the upcoming update.
