Isn't this an obvious breaking change, and thus it was only merged into the unreleased 5.7 branch and not the released 5.6 branch? |

I thought so, and the original PR was targeting 5.7. 🤷♂️ |

This PR is identical to #23959, but applied to the head of 5.6 as a bugfix as requested.
