Migrating from Port

Migrating from Port

Port has been officially deprecated. If you continue to use it, you'll be running an outdated version of Urbit which will cause communication and security issues.

If you have ships in Port that you want to continue using, we recommend they be immediately exported and moved to another hosting solution.

Exporting your Ship

The export process takes your running ship and converts it to an archived format which can be used for transport to another hosting solution. The produced zip file may be quite large, so make sure you have ~10 GB of free storage on your computer before attempting.

For each ship that you'd like to export:

  1. Ensure the ship is stopped (in the ship list, you should see its status displayed as "Stopped" with a dark grey circle indicator). If it's currently running, click the "Manage" button and from the next screen, click "Stop".
  2. From the ship list, click the "Manage" button.
  3. In the bottom "Ship Migration" panel, click "Export".
  4. Wait for the operation to complete, this may take a bit. When it's finished, a window will pop up showing you where the exported ship file is stored on your computer.
  5. Feel free to rename or move the zip file, but make sure you DO NOT delete it or run the ship again from within Port.

If you have any issues during this process, feel free to reach out to ~latter-bolden on network or @hmillerdev on Twitter.

Hosting Options

Once you have the archive of your ship, you can move it to another hosting solution. A few easy to use options include:

  • Native Planet — a physical device for running Urbit ships which has the ability to import your archived ship during setup.
  • Holium Hosting — a cloud hosting provider that supports importing your archived ship during signup.

Tlon Hosting and Planet One do not currently support importing an archived pier, but both plan to support it in the near future.
