German Song Lyrics Corpus

This repository contains a part of the corpus that was gathered as part of a Digital Humanities Project. Corpus acquisition and analysis is described in the following German language paper: "Der Einsatz von Distant Reading auf einem Korpus deutschsprachiger Songtexte" by

The paper and corpus was presented at the "7. Tagung des Verbands Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum (DHd 2020)" in Paderborn, Germany. The paper won the third prize at the annual poster slam.

Important Information

Due to legal issues, the corpus contains only the metadata of the lyrics we used in our analysis. To get the full corpus with lyrics just sent an e-mail to: thomas.schmidt@ur.de

Corpus Description

The corpus consists of 4,636 song lyrics of some of the most famous German artists since the 60s (overall 91 different artists). The metadata and lyrics were gathered via the platform LyricWiki. The corpus is furthermore structured according to the genres Pop, Rock, Rap and "Schlager". The genre attributions were given by us during the research process. More information about the corpus and how we gathered it can be found in the corresponding paper.

The corpus consists of 4 files, one for each genre (Pop, Rap, Rock, Schlager). The files are csv-files (UTF-8 encoded) consisting of the following columns:

  • genre: The genre of the song, which was assigned by us manually. (Pop, Rap, Rock, Schlager)
  • interpret: The name of the artist.
  • album: The album the song was part of.
  • release_year: The release year of the song according to LyricWiki.
  • songtitle: The title of the song.
  • lyrics: The lyrics of the song according to LyricWiki. This column is only available in a corpus you can request via mail: thomas.schmidt@ur.de
