First of all I wanted to say 'Thank you' @lemon-juice for the time and effort you have put in this addon. I really use it a lot and it served me very well :).

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows a good replacement for this addon which will continue to work with the upcoming firefox versions. I believe a port of this extension is not possible without a lot of effort or even a complete re-implementation?! So I am not expecting this to happen.

In case that there is an alternative: Does it allow to start a mouse geasture ANYWHERE in the browser, like this addon? (On images, on videos, on input fields, on the tab bar, etc.). I remember that no mouse geasture addon in chrome was able to achieve that, which was/is a major reason for me to stick to Firefox (besides multiple other reasons)

As you guessed, this extension will stop working with Firefox 57. To make it work it would need to be completely rewritten - virtually from scratch. Even if someone did it, the extension would not be able to do even 25% of what the current one does, simply because the new extension API is very limited. You can search addons.mozilla.org for mouse gestures and try those extensions marked as compatible with FF 57 and you can see how the feature set is stripped down - and it's not necessarily the fault of the addon authors.

If you try to use Chrome with some mouse gesture extension then you are much better off using Vivaldi - it has the best built-in mouse gesture support of all browsers. But certainly, it's feature set is much more basic as compared to this extension.

But you can still use Mouse Gestures Suite in Waterfox - its author plans supporting traditional extensions. This extension also works in SeaMonkey and I expect it to work there for quite some time. So while Firefox is out of the question, I will still keep MGS in maintenance mode for Waterfox and SeaMonkey.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I will try Waterfox and/or Vivaldi then.

On reddit I found a thread where a user mentions a (Windows only) tool called StrokesPlus. I consider this an attractive alternative as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/70hn76/mouse_gestures_in_firefox_57/

Feel free to close this isssue if you like. I'll leave it open as I am expecting that after Firefox 57 is released numerous other people will look at this issue as well.

You could try this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxy-gestures/ but it's not so best as this one, but at least it works.
