Adopted from #178, as I want to not mix this up with other changes. Currently blocked by spyder-ide/qtpy#487. Running debug.py with qt_api="pyside6" will fail because of this, and I couldn't figure out why.

qtpy issues resolved by using pyside6 <6.7 spyder-ide/qtpy#487 (comment)

Looks good to me now, didn't spot any obvious issues, but haven't looked closely at the displaying problems that were mentioned in the original PR. Since it works as before with pyside2, I think this can be merged.
