I'd like to see a applet that based on laerne/desaturate_all, which can change display from colour to greyscale. Now there's a GNOME Shell extension (mentioned above) and a KDE extension, plus CompizConfig settings on MATE (which works on specific window, not the whole screen), I think there's should be a desaturation applet for Cinnamon.
Any ideas?

Hello, @mraandtux.

If you are interested, here you have the Desaturate All Gnome Shell extension ported into a Cinnamon applet.

Thanks @Odyseus !
Edit: there's some bug on Firefox and VLC (flashing window frame?), GPU Acceleration issues?
PS: I haven't found any doc for porting GNOME Shell extensions to Cinnamon.

Great stuff, thanks!! (No bug with VLC on my system. A few icons flash until I rebooted Cinnamon and that's it!)

Hello @Odyseus!
Could you publish your great port of the greyscaling app to the main Cinnamon spices repo? I've been using it almost flawlessly for the past year and a half and there seems to be some demand that would be better satisfied if it were easier to find. See https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/enarhq/greyscaling_your_display_on_mint/ and very recently https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/lczmjd/is_there_a_way_to_make_screen_go_black_and_white/. I typically look into spices based on what's shown to me in the applets list and I'm sure most users expect almost all interesting spices to be up there. Yours is really the unfortunate exception!

ISSUE: lines

  • While on browsers (doesn't matter if chromium, vivaldi or firefox), when i'm writting or moving the cursor around, many straight lines, squares and corners appear all the time. It doesn't happen with other programs. The dark lines seem to be gaps that show the wallpaper of the desktop behind.
It's a bit annoying but doesn't seems to affect functionality and i'm very gratefull to finally have grayscale mode.

Is there a way to run this automatically? Preferably a CLI command.
