Applying box-shadow in IE causes the element to occupy more space, equal to the blur radius. It does not seem to affect positioning or actual box size.
For instance, on an element that is 100% total width of the page, adding box-shadow:0 0 100px #000; will cause a horizontal scroll bar and add 100px space to the right and bottom of the element (not the top or left as far as I could tell).
Normally in browsers that support this, the viewport will clip the shadow rather than expand to contain it.
