For me on ArchLinux 'python' is an alias for Python 3.x, but this script need Python 2.x, so I made use of the python2 alias, which I assume has been in most distributions for a long time now.

Hi it's a valid point I guess, but for example on Ubuntu 10.10, I don't have alias python2, but that's maybe because I don't have python3 installed. I'll try to do some research later to check if there would be better solution, that wouldn't break the functionality on systems without the alias.
