I've opened a new document, created a few text styles with left, center and right alignment, then named them using the 'Rename it' plugin. I then selected all of the layers and applied the "generate shared styles" and nothing happens.
I've tried multiple times, using new documents, restarting the machine, and deleting and re-installing the plugin.

+1 on this issue for me as well. I found that if I copied the entire artboard to a new file, it was able to create the styles from there, but then they won't be apart of my sketch library I'm working from.
I also uninstalled, reinstalled the current version as well as v1.5.0 to see if it was a release issue. No go on any of those.
A quick update: I just updated Sketch from v53.2 to v54.1 and now the styles appear to be working for me. I didn't realize I'd hit my annual renewal time so was behind a few versions, so all cleared up for me.
@amleon@lyndsayclark I will try my best to keep this updated for the latest version of Sketch but, unfortunately, I don't have enough bandwidth to make this retro-compatible with the older ones. 😞
