DMOZ Review Best Web Directory (Open Directory Project )

Since 1998, the Open directory Project (DMOZ) has been the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory on the web. It is maintained by community of volunteer editors. The editors are mostly unpaid volunteers so getting your site listed at DMOZ might not be very easy. In recent years, webmasters have complained that their particular category doesn’t seem have an editor and being listed in nearly impossible. Keep trying though, because being listed at DMOZ is said to give websites a huge boost in the Serps.

DMOZ’s policy is to include sites that have unique content, which means that many sites don’t qualify for inclusion. Among the sites that are likely to be rejected are affiliate sites with little or no original or useful content, however, some affiliate content is acceptable, but when it occupies too much of a site, then the site will probably be rejected.

Another reason why a site may be rejected is because of the Submission itself. If the title and description provided in the submission does not meet DMOZ’s guidelines, then it’s possible that the editor may think it’s not worth his or her time if they need to rewrite the title and/or the description for you. Personally, I don’t know if this is true but I have heard of it happening. The bottom line: when submitting your website, read and follow the guidelines. Remember, the description is intended to give people an objective statement of what can be found in the site, and not to promote it. When submitting a site, always take time to find the right category for it and don’t submit it to a category that is higher up than it belongs, because it probably won’t be accepted and could cause unnecessary delays or even rejection. Remember, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right…the first time.

It’s universally accepted that being listed in DMOZ will help a website but exactly how much is still open for debate. There is no guarantee that your site will be accepted, but it’s definitely worth the time and effort to at least submit it. When you are, going to submit to the directory, take the time to write a quality description and title. Remember, you are trying to explain objectively to a reader what your website is about, you are not writing a commercial for you site. Once you have submitted your website the only thing you can do now is be patient and wait. With the number of sites being submitted and the number of available editors, it could take a very long time for your site to get approved.

Good Points:

  • Listings are free
  • Human-Edited for content quality control.
  • Search engine friendly and descriptive URLs.
  • Has a dedicated IP address.
  • It has Alexa Traffic Rank of 2K.
  • Google Page Rank 7 with inner page PR

Room for Improvement:

  • Long waits for website reviews
  • Site doesn’t provide feedback for submissions

This is the “original” web directory and consider by many to be essential. Don’t be put off by the long waits for reviews, despite the shortage of editors, quality websites are being added on a regular basis.
