Pitch

The web interface should provide a "Reply on Feed" option. This would basically create a reply that shows up on the feed somehow (perhaps by being autoboosted?).

Motivation

Both on Twitter and on Fedi there's a fairly regular amount of "LRT: me" or "LB: me" posts. It's practically impossible to track down the post they're referring to because it's been boosted by everyone else already. This can make for hilarity or you can call someone a nazi over it. While the hilarity isn't bad, turning on your friends over misunderstandings is bad. So let's discourage that somehow.

twitter used to have a .@ reply option where people would put a dot before the mention to make the reply show up in follower feeds. however, this only worked because twitter used to filter out replies by detecting if the post started with an @ mention.

i'm not sure if adopting this behavior would map 1:1 onto mastodon's UX, because i think replies are filtered by the inreplyto metadata instead (with an exception made for self-replies).

Twitter's official apps don't even show @ mentions when replying anymore, their suggestion was to retweet your own post if you want to show it in all feeds.

I have seen the same usage on Mastodon too.

We personally would like to see a proper "Reply on Feed" button, similar to how Twitter has a dropdown for the "Quote Tweet" option. Could also make a new post type (or something) to the ActivityPub for these.
