Pitch

The current feed is Reverse Chronological. We scroll down infinitely instead of reading the posts up until we've cleared our feed like rss. Please allow the option for Chronological Feed (basically home button should take me to the latest post ive read not to the top of my feed and there should not be a nagging pop up that never goes away until i go up to the top of my feed and have to start infinitely scrolling again)

Motivation

the current format of the Reverse Chronological Feed incentivizes addictive patterns and use instead of doing the more useful option by default

You might find "Slow mode" does what you want (Preferences->Appearance->Animations and accessibility). It won't automatically update the timeline until you prompt.

Most apps do utilise the "marker" system to remember where you go to - which the Web UI does set, but it doesn't currently read (see #19036 ). It might be worth just trying a different app for now.

I think a lot of people would find this option very valuable. The apps already remember your current position, and this would let people read posts in chronological order while scrolling down, which is far easier than scrolling up is at the moment.

I'd love to see an option to view someone's page or a hashtag this way, like Tumblr lets you, so you can see progression. I know that threads work this way, so I'm sure it's possible with a timeline...

I would find this useful. Although I understand that not everybody uses social media this way, I like to read every post from every account that I Follow every day. For obvious reasons (engagement, control over your feed via 'algorithms'), configuring Twitter and Facebook for use this way is a pain and I still need to remember the last post that I saw so that, when I've scrolled down to it, I know that I'm all 'caught up'. I'm grateful that Mastodon makes this easier by not tampering with the order of my feed with any algorithmic nonsense, but it never crossed my mind how useful it would be to just be able to read posts LITERALLY chronologically.

This also solves a very, very common problem that I have across all of social media where I'll see replies in a conversation unfolding BACKWARDS (as I scroll down), creating an odd mystery of guessing what people are talking about. Same is true when big social events happen and you see the takes and aftermath before seeing the actual news, itself. These are cases where being able to read posts in order (rather than reverse order) would be super useful.

I add my voice for a chronological timeline, since the last read position is synchronized, it would offer a better way to read the timeline.

Reverse chronological timeline works for stateless viewing of any user's feed, but it is not a user friendly way to see our own curated timeline of followed posts.
