Responses to toots from other servers not visible

Steps to reproduce the problem

1. When people on other servers ask questions and their toots appear in my timeline because I follow their hashtags etc., I cannot see responses to their toots by people whom I do not follow (yet), which means that I can mostly not see any other responses at all.
2. This is annoying because I then tend to answer questions that have already been solved.
3. I spoke to colleagues who are also on Mastodon about it but we could not figure out what to do.

Expected behaviour

I should automatically see responses to all content that is shown to me because I follow certain hashtags, groups or people.

Actual behaviour

I can only see responses by people on my own server or in my current network.

Does this mean that I have to contact my server host to fix this because it's on him to solve the problem? A Mastodon-wide solution, even if it's just the GUI workaround suggested in the other issues, would be preferable to 'local' fixes, I guess.

There actually isn't a solution yet, from my understanding. If you read the doc in #26863, it explains how replies are grabbed on different servers, and there's basically no way to ensure you see all replies without viewing the post on its origin instance.
