Hello there.

It seems Twitter and Instagram support emoji hashtags and people use them for activist campaigns, sports and other stuff. I don't use Twitter or Instagram, so i can't give a specific example - i just did read about it. I think it would be a good idea to allow Mastodon to have emojis in hashtags too, so people coming from those services can import their stuff to here more easily. Might also be important for cross-posted toots.

Sorry if this is a duplicate. I couldn't find a request for this.

  • I searched or browsed the repo’s other issues to ensure this is not a duplicate.

This would be a lovely addition.

For further information, the Twitter instance has a branding guide for 'campaign' emojis. Link. Or this Medium post. Or this 101 on 'hashflags'.

However, rather than tie it to "branding," or the marketing of major corporations, I offer the idea of hashflags being something that can bind together instances and create broader moments of engagement and joy across the members of the fediverse.

Anyways, I think hashflags would be a wonderful idea and would allow for folks to gather more powerfully and connect better.
