I had a play with getting button placement to work using css grid. But I realised it means you don't end up with empty buttons which is probably a requirement.
Regardless there might be a way to fix this and it means that you don't need to have empty buttons in the menu config.
Thought you would find the code interesting but don't think it's in a state to merge.
