Before the sorting, the investigator explained the method and read out the condition of instruction.

The instructor stressed especially that there was no "correct" way to sort the items, and that statements were formulated so that people could reasonably disagree on them.
Participants were also reminded that the vertical dimension on the Q sort template was meaningless.

Everyone was seated individually at separate tables in two spacious rooms,
