I'd advise against using variable-length arrays in C99, too. First, you have to [check the values](https://www.securecoding.cert.org/confluence/display/seccode/ARR32-C.+Ensure+size+arguments+for+variable+length+arrays+are+in+a+valid+range) that control their size to protect against stack-smashing. Second, they can't be initialized. Finally, avoiding them will make it easier to upgrade to newer standards later on.
