Notes and tutorials to help you map things in the real world.

This is still VERY MUCH a WORK IN PROGRESS

Where Things Live

OpenStreetMap is a global map of the world, created by a huge open community. It stores things that anyone could find "on the ground" if they visited the spot. There's some more background on the OpenStreetMap wiki How We Map page.

If you want to map things that are more personal, or specific to a particular project, then you should store that information somewhere else. That could be one of the projects related to OpenStreetMap, for example, umap or on your own website. You might still use the underlying OpenStreetMap tiles to show the general map, and then overlay your information on top of it.

How to...

Other Interesting Links...

  • Leafletjs is a useful Javascript library for adding mapping to custom websites
  • MapKnitter makes it easy to overlay aerial photos taken from balloons or drones and position them correctly for use in other mapping software
  • OpenAerialMap lets you use your own aerial imagery (maybe created with the help of MapKnitter) when mapping in OpenStreetMap
