The May Day Mystery is a series of cryptic advertisements placed in the Arizona Daily Wildcat since at least 1981. They typically appear every year on or just before May 1, and they usually include common elements such as the characters "SR/CL", a drawing called "Smiley Guy", a so-called Leitmotiv, various quotations, and writing in different languages. They also often have mathematical equations and mentions of coordinates, Hotel California, and names of historical figures.
