It seems the reason the tests are failing is that I did a bunch of things that are valid in Python 3.10 and Python 3.11 but not valid in earlier versions. So basically I need to change my development environment to use Python 3.8, so that I can see all these issues locally. |

This is a draft version of #186 so that I can run the tests. I'll mark it as ready once the tests pass.
