[Run] Always Show the Run Bar #3344
Comments
I just want to clarify here, are you suggesting Run search box to be on the desktop or on the taskbar? Please help me understand here, I'm not sure I understand how adding the search box to the desktop would add visibility. |
I'm recommending that PowerToys Run have mode that keeps the search bar on the desktop. After startup, the search box is visible and can be used by clicking on it or the keyboard shortcut. Then, it stays on the desktop behind windows until it is activated again by clicking or the keyboard. The purpose is not to expose the feature, but to allow for point-and-click activation and integrating it into customized desktops. This is probably not a high-priority item because the reliability and search issues need fixed first. I mentioned Taskbar Search because it can be activated with the mouse and serves a similar purpose as PT Run. However, Taskbar Search searches and indexes slowly, so PT Run serves the purpose better. |
Right now we have no plans to integrate the dialog in with shell. |
I'm not following; what does "with shell" refer to? |
Shell is what is the interface of Windows. Taskbar, file explorer, start menu, ... |
I believe "always show the Run bar" are the important words here and taskbar doesn't really have much to do with it. Especially integrating is off-topic. Title should be updated. |
Summary of the new feature/enhancement
Since PT Run merges advantages of Windows Taskbar Search and Run, I would like to use it as my go-to app launch mechanism. Taskbar Search can be activated both by a keyboard shortcut and by clicking on the button/bar. PT Run only supports the former and only is visible during use.
It would feel more integrated if there is an option to always show the Run bar on the desktop. When the shortcut is used, the bar would appear on top of the open windows but would otherwise remain behind other windows. This would allow it to be immediately visible when starting a session and make it a potential replacement of the taskbar.
