This PR mostly resolves #78 and has the updates from #70 manually merged into it. Since I was testing, I also fixed #79 (outdated kubectl) and #80 (whitespace issues), and addressed feedback for #67 (Python requirements.txt.temp being confusing).
@krystan This includes your commits, so I'll close #70 if you want to review.
I have not done Java yet and will do this as a separate PR for review by the Java team.
