The LCD class is implemented by several device drivers. One of them is HD44780 (aka 1602). This driver has a number of adapters; parallel port 4-bit, shift register (74HC595), I2C IO expander, etc. Is it possible to use a cheaper 74HC164 instead of the 74HC595?

Yes this works fine. New circuit description is needed. Please see 0f03b73.
