Only source of desert stone is compressing desert sand.

Carbon steel requires coal dust.

Can't you get desert stone by mining it directly? Or by cooking desert cobble if you have that mod installed?

Mining desert stone gives you desert cobble. Cooking desert cobble doesn't do anything.
Yes, I can (and did) add a recipe to turn desert cobble into desert stone. But half the point of publishing a modpack like this is so that people who just want to play don't have to muck about with making the different pieces work together.

You're entirely right; I clearly haven't played this incarnation of the game enough yet. I've added a cooking recipe for desert cobble after its definition in default_tweaks, which will allow the player to get access to desert stone without needing to compress desert sand (and which follows the conventions of the desert_uses mod and normal cobblestone).
