Fun fact: Extension Manager now has nearly 4500 unique installs. This is a great milestone, but it also means 4000+ people are using the logo I created in less than 5 minutes :)

GNOME provides some excellent resources on creating compelling app icons. While the current icon is perfectly serviceable, I think the program has outgrown it. It would be nice to have a modern "GNOME-Style" icon which properly fits in with the rest of the desktop. Some goals to keep in mind:

  • Try keep the puzzle piece metaphor. This is fairly universal in representing extensions.
  • Continue to use a blue colour scheme. This is the main distinguishing factor against the official extensions app, and it's important to make sure they aren't too similar.

Help wanted - If you are good with design and would like to contribute, please get in touch!

based on your specifications, I came up with this one(see below) WDYT?

Hey, thanks for joining in!

based on your specifications, I came up with this one(see below) WDYT?

I think this is a great starting point. I like that the quarter tiling gives it a bit of visual interest. I think my main concern would be that the logo is too "square" - i.e. it doesn't have any distinguishing geometry. If you take a look at some of the other GNOME app icons:

They tend to be a basic shape with some additions overlayed on top to make it feel less 'regular.'

I had a quick go in Inkscape to try out a variation of your design, swapping the square for the actual extension piece itself. I think it turned out well (although needs to be coloured).

I've had a play around with the puzzle-piece shape and came up with the following ideas. I'm aiming for a "translucency" effect with the colouring, like it's made of frosted glass.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I've asked around and the general feedback has been something between C and F. I've come up with the following, which modifies C slightly with a updated gradient:

And development version:
