kmzmapper

A tool to annotate images using data from KML (and one day, as the name suggests, from KMZ) files.

Installation

Short Answer

Run the install-deps.sh shell script to install the required dependencies. This will download and install everything needed to run the script - it may take some time, and will require you to enter your password in order to install some of the dependencies.

Long Answer

You'll need Ruby 2.3.1 and exiftool.

Use the ruby manager of your choice to install the required ruby version (I use rbenv).

Exiftool can be installed via brew:

$ brew install exiftool

Once you have it installed, install the dependencies using bundler:

$ gem install bundler
$ bundle

Usage

The apply_kml_track.rb script requires a KML file (not a KMZ file in order) to run. It's really easy to convert a KMZ to a KML by running the following command:

$ unzip some-gps-track.kmz

This will typically produce a file called doc.kml.

You should then be able to run the script using the following:

$ ./apply_kml_track.rb <path_to_kml_file> <directory_containing_images> <gps_track_timezone>

Note that only PST is supported as a GPS track timezone for now.

This script will update the EXIF data in situ - you may want to ensure that you have a backup copy of the images before running the script against them, just in case.

Tests

There are specs for the underlying parsing/GPS point inference code. You can run them with the following command:

$ bundle exec rspec
