Bug in documentation: New version of MLT is needed. Latest Ubuntu (14.04) has too old version. It can compile 4402905 but not 51b59ac.

Shotcut requires MLT git. I just checked readmes, and it does not specify a specific version. The build script makes it clear it uses git master, and this is by design.

Just for remarks: debian jessie has mlt 0.9.2-1 and last it can compile is: d04dbc6
