Is it possible to reference table numbers

Is there syntax to include a table number in the document? For example, is something like this available?

However, now I also know where the confusion came from: I thought you meant a way to insert a table number, not give a table an ID. Is there a way to replace a 'hardcoded' table number with a reference like in LaTeX?

No, you can't. Although it should be fixed when the new grammar is finalized, although no-one knows when that is. See https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/xml2rfc-doc.html#element-xref and https://mmark.miek.nl/post/syntax/#citations and what is currently possible.

you actually can wit the except it's not implemented in mmark, the format attribute can be used to tweak the output.

    [@RFC2525, see, section 5] -> sectionFormat=“comma”
    [@RFC2525, (see) section 5] -> sectionFormat=“parens”
    [@RFC2525, 5] -> sectionFormat=“bare”

We could do e.g.
(#id, see title) and (#id, see counter), where "see" is optional, this would set the format attribute. Setting both sectionFormat and format isn't supported then.
Unsure if this is massively complicating things are a neat way of solving this.
