The original purpose of BorderSkin was to simulate aero interface on windows xp. however with the upcoming release of windows 10, this doesn't really have much value anymore, so there must be a new vision to work towards to.

One of the top features that distinguished BorderSkin was Aero Explorer, because it added real the vista explorer controls like breadcrumbs on the borders of XP explorer windows.

However, the real power of this feature wasn't just the vista controls, but the ability of creating custom controls and put them on the windows borders.

So the new goal is to provide the ability through plugins to create custom controls to be added on windows borders, whether these controls was to specific window type (like explorer) or for all windows.

Of course the normal features like blur are still maintained.

If you have an idea (even if it was a small one) of what BorderSkin goal can be, please don't hesitate to discuss it here.

I am using BorderSkin to skin the boring plain Windows 10 and 11 interface to Aero or the Windows 3 or (Windows XP Media Center Edition) Royale themes I created. WindowBlinds or Curtains do not support Windows 11 but BorderSkin just works. Well, except for...

  • The inactive elements that are never used, there is no difference between an active or inactive window.
  • Windows cannot be resized by trying to select the top border.
  • In Windows 3, the title bar caption was centered, BorderSkin allows to do this but the longer the title, the more it is shifted to the right. I think maybe because of the Aero illumination effect (that is not used).
  • Bitmap fonts with the .FON extension cannot seem to be used. Windows 3 used the "System" font.
  • In Windows 3, the close button was on the left and had the same function as clicking the icon in Windows 95. It would be nice if BorderSkin would allow to replace the icon. I configured the close button to be on the left (over the icon) in my skin but the functionality is not accurate.
