Pandas for Financial Data Analysis What is Pandas? Pandas is a data analysis library built on Numpy. Pandas Features Database-like tables with cells and columns Dataframes (two dimensional arrays) Data cleaning: can remove duplicates, manage missing values, align tables by index Create "pivot tables" SQL operators such as "Join" and "Group By" Can handle CSV, Excel, txt files Export data to CSV inline data visualization featuring Matplotlib In [2]:

%matplotlib inline import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import numpy as np import pandas as pd import pandas.io.data as web import datetime *Quick note: io.data subpackage will be depricated in Pandas version 0.17. Use with caution! Let's Get Started There are a few ways to import data into Pandas:

  • Local files
  • Remote files
  • Remote Data Access (using the pandas.io API) Pandas.io API use an API to retrieve historical data from SP500 use API to retrieve specific date's stock price In [3]:

start = datetime.datetime(2010, 1, 1)  end = datetime.datetime(2015, 8, 24)  sp500 = web.DataReader("%5EGSPC", 'yahoo', start, end)  sp500.head() Out[3]: Open High Low Close Volume Adj Close Date 2010-01-04 1116.560059 1133.869995 1116.560059 1132.989990 3991400000 1132.989990 2010-01-05 1132.660034 1136.630005 1129.660034 1136.520020 2491020000 1136.520020 2010-01-06 1135.709961 1139.189941 1133.949951 1137.140015 4972660000 1137.140015 2010-01-07 1136.270020 1142.459961 1131.319946 1141.689941 5270680000 1141.689941 2010-01-08 1140.520020 1145.390015 1136.219971 1144.979980 4389590000 1144.979980 In [4]:
