Watching a web developing course where the instructor is using Pesticide on a local file and it's working, while I'm doing to same and it's working on everything BUT local files.

I don't think I'm the only one facing this as others have also reported the issue.

This is a permissions issue. If you are using Chrome - go to Extensions and then to the Pesticide extension and click details. Scroll down and find 'Allow access to file URLs'
Once that is turned on, the extension will be allowed file access to your local files.
Enjoy!

And how do i do this in firefox?

juanbaltasar - Firefox uses different add-ons by different developers. Firefox uses both Firebug and FF Developer Edition for it's dev tools. I'd suggest looking in the options -> addons or extensions and see if it has a similar option to Chrome. As I don't use FF for development tools, I'm not familiar with the process in FF.
Cheers,
Mathorin

Once that is turned on, the extension will be allowed file access to your local files.

Try closing out all Chrome windows and then try again and make sure the setting remains as Allow access to file URL's

Try downloading Pesticide for Chrome (without hover bar) and then turn on "Allow access to file URL". It worked for me. Hope it will fix your issue as well.
