On my Fedora 21 install, the following netcat port is installed:

$ nc --version
Ncat: Version 6.47 ( http://nmap.org/ncat )

... which lacks support for the -q switch (wait after stdin for x seconds, then quit). mpdstats_ uses nc -q, and thus fails.

Different nc(1) implementations will use different flags, as highlighted
in munin-monitoring#576. This environment variable allows one to pass any option to the
nc binary.
