Renewed focus, goals for Open Procure project

Original/continued goal of OpenProcure

To collate and aggregate often hidden or hard-to-find thresholds for agency spending.

Possible barriers to contributions in past:

  • Lack of context. Contextualization of importance of procurement data thresholds through narrative, visualizations and real-world examples.
  • Lack of refined focus on type of agency. While other types of agencies are no doubt valuable and welcome, a renewed focus on municipal procurement data could give the project more immediate, tangible goals to accomplish.
  • Gap between GitHub and civil servants, other data wonks - More than a few valuable contributors could help out with this project, and be more easily encouraged to, were it not required that they first understand the Git workflow in order to contribute. It may be more advantageous and yield a higher ROI if, in addition to PRs to contribute, we set up a Google Sheets workbook that serves as an API for Open Procure.

Starter roadmap to revive OpenProcure project

  • Framing the project - Starting with landing page, a clear and compelling case for what makes this project different from other projects on procurement. Backed up with narrative, data visualizations and broader context.
  • Getting word out - Unique visual identity for project. Connect with nonprofits whose goals align with that of OpenProcure project. Use data.world project. Possible use of social media to share Google Sheet link virally.
  • Incenvtizing contributions
