The virtual disk image is sparse, it does not take up 80GB of storage. Catalina is the largest and it takes about 18GB for a new install, with Mojave and High Sierra taking a few GB less. The temporary files for Catalina take about 23GB because InstallESD.dmg is stored three times, 7GB for the file, 7GB for its 1GB chunks, and another 9GB for the virtual disk image containing the bootable installation which is mostly that file plus BaseSystem.dmg.

So a Catalina install takes about 18+23, Mojave about 15+20, and High Sierra 14+20.

40GB is a reasonable estimate for the required space for the installation. Could bump it to 45 if we want to be absolutely safe nobody gets stuck without enough space.

Ah you are right. Sorry for the unnecessary noice, I just did not tought about this long enough.
I think 40gb as an estimate is just fine in this case!
