I’d love to hear some examples of how you are using parent/child devices. The current implementation doesn’t work well for me, and I’m thinking about how to write a feature request. Here are 2 different examples:
QSC SPA4-100 is a half-width 1U device. It can be mounted by itself, or you can flip the rack ears the other way and add a joiner plate to mount 2 of them side by side.
I designate this as a child device. I have a parent device type called “Generic 2-in-1 bracket” with 2 device bays, so I can populate either 1 or 2.
I often place an Apple TV and a Roku side by side on a 1U shelf. So I have a parent device of “Generic 1U Shelf”.
In both cases, the rack elevation view is not very helpful.
My proposal is a new DeviceType field for rack width with options of 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and full. If this is full, then continue the current behavior. Otherwise allow installing multiple devices in the same RU, without needing a “child” designation. This would make the rack elevation view far more useful, showing both names and images. But this does not help the AppleTV situation because those are not rackable. In that case, I propose displaying the parent device “description” field so it can be customized to say what it contains.
