When you use the default of README.md as your index page, the entire code section (the majority of the page) is empty. Would be great to fill that space with something useful like the TOC

Opening the TOC in such a case makes no sense to me, if you also take the single-column-mode (very narrow window-width) into consideration.
My current solution is a customized behavior to which allows you to switch between the (in groc already available) two- and single-column layouts, and to define the initial layout:
Gotcha, yeah i see. Could be nice to be able to specify the layout in the
source file somewhere. Otherwise makes sense. Didn't realize the layout
was already in the codebase for the narrow-width case.
