E-Mails by contacts don't show photo

Expected behavior

E-Mails by contacts in my inbox should show the photo assigned to them in the contacts app.

Actual behavior

Only the initial letters of the contact are shown.

Browser console error:
GET https://nextcloud.example.com/apps/mail/api/avatars/url/someone@example.com
[HTTP/2 404 Not Found 2105ms]

Seems to be an older problem, see also issue #1435

since contact images are coming from server I would suggest updating to the latest release and giving that another try. Ref https://github.com/nextcloud/server/wiki/Maintenance-and-Release-Schedule

As I am using managed Nextcloud I cannot update but only wait for the provider to update. Maybe someone with current version can try to reproduce?

@ChristophWurst I can confirm Discostu36's finding. Although my installation sets up on Yunohost with only 21.0.3 (latest version; it may take a few months more until 22.x.x is available).

I'm now at Server 21.0.5 and Mail 1.10.5 and still have the same issue. Maybe someone with Nextcloud 22 can try to reproduce?

I have the same concern.

Mail app version: 1.13.0

Server configuration
Operating system: Debian 11
Web server: Nginx ( SWAG contener )
Database: MariaDB 10.5.16
PHP version: PHP 8.0.13
Nextcloud Version: 24.0.7

Client configuration
Browser: Firefox 100 (64 Bit)
Operating system: Windows 10

It works a little better for me.
Photos appear in the message list and mail header but only after a very very long time (24 hours or more).
My config : NC 29.0.3 (AIO 9.1.0), Mail app 3.7.2
