fix: improve build to reduce bundle size

fix: #1339

Changes proposed in this PR:

• Improved build process: now we build in two modes, one using ES6 modules (import/export) and one with CommonJS modules (require).

• Modified package.json to allow bundlers to be capable of Tree Shake the library.

• I have followed (at least) the PR section of the contributing guide.
