support of nftables missing

nodogsplash startup failed since I switched from iptables to nftables. Is the support of nftables planned in the future?

I'm not aware of a plan yet, perhaps others here can comment.
It very much depends upon what your operating system supports, you do not mention what you are using.
The answer to the problem is to install the iptables-nft "shim" module (aka xtables-nft). This translates iptables commands, in my experience very successfully.

I solved the problem here in RPI4 by upgrading system and rebooting
