Not working with newer versions of SS4?

I think the module is outdated for newer versions of silverstripe. The documentation tells me to create a php file in the root to check if webp is supported for the installed GD library but Silverstripe will redirect this php file to a 404 page. It also tells me to put the webp redirect in the .htaccess in the root but there is none.

I have installed the module with composer and I have done the dev/build?flush=1 but there are not even webp images being created in my assets folder.

Is something new about this problem?
