Numerical Methods for Solving Predator-Prey Models

Introduction

Predator-prey models are mathematical descriptions of the interaction between two species, where one species (the predator) hunts and feeds on the other species (the prey). These models are commonly used in ecology to understand population dynamics and ecosystem behavior. The evolution of predator-prey systems can be described by a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which can be challenging to solve analytically. Hence, numerical methods are often employed to approximate the solutions.

In this report, we investigate and compare numerical methods for solving predator-prey models, considering two test cases provided by our boss. We evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of each method to make recommendations for practical applications.

Problem Statement

We are given a system of differential equations representing the evolution of prey and predator populations:

dx/dt = αx - βxy + f(t)
dy/dt = δxy - γy + g(t)

where:

  • x(t) represents the prey population at time t,
  • y(t) represents the predator population at time t,
  • α, β, γ, δ are positive real numbers representing the interaction coefficients,
  • f(t) and g(t) are given functions of time representing external factors affecting the populations.

Test Cases

Case (a)

  • Parameters:
    • α = β = γ = δ = 1
    • f(t) = -sin(t) - (cos(t))^2 - cos(t)
    • g(t) = sin(t) + (cos(t))^2 - cos(t)
  • Initial Conditions: x(t=0) = 2, y(t=0) = 0
  • Exact Solution:
    • x(t) = 1 + cos(t)
    • y(t) = 1 - cos(t)

Case (b)

  • Parameters:
    • α = 2/3, β = 4/3, γ = 1, δ = 1
    • f(t) = 0, g(t) = 0
  • Initial Conditions: x(t=0) = 0.9, y(t=0) = 0.9
  • Solution Behavior:
    • The solution should repeat itself, and the maxima of each population should be consistent over time.

  • Euler's Method
  • Runge-Kutta Methods (e.g., RK2, RK4)
  • Adaptive Step Methods (e.g., Adaptive RK4)
