If the LINQ query returns an empty sequence, then an InvalidOperationException is thrown. Let's make this a more friendly exception if no elements were returned.

Second thought: this function also needs to be hidden from the public, since the ClientUPS.GetVariable function essentially replaces this with safer functionality.
