Nuxt 3 Support

Nuxt 3 experimental support for image Module started in v1 branch and documentation is available on v1.image.nuxtjs.org.

In order to use the image module for Nuxt 3, you have to install @nuxt/image-edge. Releases are automated with each commit so it is advised to lock the version and regularly check the changes.

Nuxt 2 will be supported in v0 branch in the meantime.

This discussion will be used to track the progress roadmap and collect feedbacks.

I have the same setup as you (same RC and image edge version) and I get a broken image when I do this in nuxt.config.ts:

It deploys now but when I visit the website every image gives 404 error on the browser console. When I log in Vercel console and search for the logs I found nothing in the build phase but in the runtime logos it gives this error:

Similar to @alejogamboa, it's working great locally - but I'm getting 500 errors in the browser after deploying to Netlify. All of them say the same thing:

I'm seeing the same error when trying to optimize remote images from an API. I added the domain to domains but it only results in broken images like @r-token mentioned. Explicitly adding provider: 'ipx' did nothing. Does anyone have an example repo with this working? Might be hwlpful to pindown the issue.

Check if the sharp binary on Azure aligns with your platform’s needs.

See the installation guide for details: Sharp Installation.

Building your app on macOS and syncing it to a Linux server could for example cause sharp library compatibility issues. If the issue is different, providing more information or a reproduction repository would help in diagnosing the problem.

Very straightforward. Ssr is true. Deploying to azure using the official deployment with GitHub actions.
When I acces the files directly example.com/omage.png it is there. However when using in nuxt image or trying with the ipx, it return 404.

There is a Getting Started guide. Install the module, add it to your Nuxt Config in nuxt.config.{js|ts} and use Server Side Rendering for Nuxt 3 (which is the default). Is there a particular step that you have difficulty with?

How close is support for static sites? I'm able to get things working with nuxi dev but nuxi generate does not seem to work and does not generate an _ipx folder in .output that I can see, so all the images 404.

In @pi0's announcement (at the very top) there is a roadmap and it says "Support static generation via nitro prerendering", which is not yet implemented. While it works in dev mode and server environments, it does not yet generate/save images for static rendering.

As far as I understand it, this is related to Nuxt's new Nitro engine. It sounds simple to just save the images, however the work is a bit more complex and requires rewrites of certain areas. Probably not a big undertaking either, but I suspect @pi0 has many other things on his plate. Good things take time. I'd like to do my part, but I'm not yet up to speed on Typescript.

I want a responsive img but also want to add width and height coz lighthouse is yelling. I've found in nuxt-img docs that:

The reson you should use width and height with images, is to hint the browsers the aspect ratio of the element once the file is loaded and rendered. This will prevent layout shifts and improve your site's UX since there will be less jumpy elements on screen at load time.

Can't answer for the module behaviour atm, though.

I'm actually not sure but I'm inclined to think the answer is no. The spec doesn't seem to mention it so I'd assume browsers only use width and height for this.

I'm guessing your question comes from the fact you can have different image sources with different intrinsic aspect ratios when using sizes and srcset. In that case it wouldn't make sense to be able to specify only the aspect ratio of one of them since it would only prevent layout shifting in one of those rendered breakpoints (assuming we're dealing with an extreme case that uses completely different aspect ratios for each of them).

The following line from the spec makes it clear that you should always specify these even if you're using CSS to set the size of your images:

Developers are encouraged to specify an intrinsic aspect ratio via width and height attributes on lazy loaded images, even if CSS sets the image's width and height properties, to prevent the page layout from shifting around after the image loads.

Given images will sometimes use the same aspect ratio across breakpoints, I would go for setting both width and height to the image file instrinsic values (unless you're cropping, in that case I'd use the values used for this, perhaps for the biggest size you'll crop them to). This should make lighthouse happy most of the time and leave you only with one unanswered question lol

Any plans to support a blurred image until the image is visible? I'm coming from Gridsome and this is something g-image does that I really love.

A base64 blurred image loaded by default. This makes: 1) Larger images outside the viewport are not requested until they’re needed, and 2) The blurred image is in a container with the same dimensions as the real image—therefore, no jumping when the image loads.

An Intersection Observer that swaps the base image for the larger image, when the image is in the viewport. (Lazy loading).

It would be great if Nuxt Image had a placeholder API configurable at the provider level. That would allow to get it out-of-the-box for providers that support it or implement custom ones with any other solutions (like suggested above.)

@pi0 I am getting 404 error for all images after static deployment in AWS S3 bucket. Can you please help me to understand this issue related to nuxt-img:
All my images are located inside assets/images folder. Some are inside subfolders too.
So I have added this to my nuxt.config.ts file:

The error is 404 (Not Found)
The deployed link is trying to access the /assets folder which doesn't exist in the static build.

What exactly is your purpose in using ssr in production? I am using nuxt 3 universal mod. It works locally for me. but it doesn't work in production(vercel).

Add more extension if used.
Right now original image is copied but engine isn't working. In that case to build solution along with module you can use original one. After upgrading remove it and then check if images working correct.
This solution is only good on development stage.

@Ischafak if your using cloudflare pages to host your static site you will notice your site on Cloudflare will look for images in a /_ipx/ directory. This is essentially replacing that directory.

As an example lets say when your site is on Cloudflare pages you inspect your image and it says it's trying to get them from a URL that contains /_ipx/w_480/.
In that case you would create a file in the root of your website called _redirects and add the following to it:

/_ipx/w_480/* /:splat

I have now switched to hosting images on Cloudinary and using their API to manipulate images and totally removed nuxt image as a dependency.. i may come back in the future, but if you have a lot of images I would suggest using hosted solutions.

I suggest imagekit.io over Cloudinary as the imagekit docs and GUI are 100% better. Also, I found imagekit.io slightly faster than Cloudinary and their support is top-notch and pricing is cheaper (more bang for buck). Easily able to use with server API,too.

I just dropped in @nuxt/image-edge in place of @nuxt/image when migrating a project from Nuxt 2 to Nuxt 3. It worked flawlessly, so far as I can tell. I have not gotten into testing different transforms, effects, etc but I assume these API calls are similar to the old way. My content provider is ImgIx. I will report back here with any errors or issues I find.

Apologies, my bad! I just checked and I'm serving images from /public and not /assets, /assets is currently broken on production builds.

nuxt-img currently works for me for full static site generation except when I have the image source passed in as props and render it as a background-image using useImage(). It kind of works in dev (images are shown, but always all full resolution of the raw image) but not at all once generated. I am using the default ipx provider with images hosted locally in public folder and all webp format.

The nuxt-img site says "Static Image support is under progress for Nuxt 3", but is that really the problem (because support for both static generation and useImage are marked as done in this discussion), or am I doing something wrong that's causing the crawler not to get to these images?
