Notifications are not read by screen readers

Steps to reproduce

1. Open a screen reader (eg NVDA)
2. Click the 'Show toast' button

What is Expected?

The content of the toast should be read by the screen reader

What is actually happening?

Nothing is read.

This is an accessibility issue as screen reader users will not be aware of the content of the notification if they can't see it. Adding the ARIA alert role to the notification would resolve this.
