This has been updated to circa 2019 World Bank population values, along with circa 2019 World Bank GDP (millions of US dollars). Where World Bank doesn't track the details that Natural Earth does, either separate research was done or a population proportioned breakout was calculated (lookups and formula's in the housekeeping file).

Restarting my March 7th comment, the housekeeping > ne_admin_0_details OpenOffice file now has tabs for GDP and population, taken from World Bank circa 2019 values:

the "primary" tab (which gets exported as DBF and joined to the geometries generated by MapShaper) does a lookup into that tabs.
