Sometimes, it's useful to separate the email adress someone uses from his/her credentials. For instance, Alice Sponge could authenticate as asponge@example.org but would like to appear to the others as alice@sponge.org.

Also, a standard IMAP daemon, like dovecot, authenticates a user with only the username (omitting the @domain.xyz portion). Trying to authenticate the full e-mail results in an auth error.
