Kopete is being replaced by KDE Telepathy.

Name should be updated.

I think KDE Telepathy doesn’t support OTR (yet). That’s why I am still using Kopete.

Keep using kopete is unsafe, it's an abandoned project, and is almost official that is left without maintenance.
Evidence?

  1. Developers are gone. The last new in the official page is around 2008:
    "Development News August 3rd 2008"
    http://kopete.kde.org/news.php
  2. Words from George Kiagiadakis, a KDE Developer:
"To get to kopete now, as you realize, there is no much place for kopete in alhttps://gkiagia.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/what-is-telepathy-kde/l this. So, as soon as we merge all this in the KDE SC, kopete is going to get out of there. All in all, it has not received much development in the last years and even many of its former maintainers are now looking towards Telepathy-KDE, so I don’ t think we have any reason to keep it around."
    https://gkiagia.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/what-is-telepathy-kde/
  3. Words from Kubuntu 12.10 Release announcement:
"Telepathy-KDE replaces the unmaintained Kopete as the default IM client."
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/12.10-release

Remember, Unmaintained = Insecure

You might want to take a chance on Jitsi, works great on Kubuntu 13.10 without problems.

But still KDE Telepathy IS NOT Kopete and https://prism-break.org/en/projects/kde-telepathy/ now falsely indicates that it supports OTR. It does not support OTR.

Do we know if the kopete-cryptography package works with Telepathy? I am guessing not? That means neither OTR nor PGP is available.

Without encryption options I feel like it should not be on PRISM Break.

It doesn't look like it's supported right now. We can remove it for the time being.

Kopete/KDE Telepathy are now removed, good decision. Because security is not a priority in them.
Bad KDE issue, I just disappoint and Kubuntu already eliminated from my system (took me great effort to reviewed carefully, for get ride Unity's spyware), I'll stick with the always steady and solid as a rock, Debian Gnome. From now on my main system.
Debian KDE is too special but brings very kopete and konqueror too integrated into the system. Jitsi not work fully with very old versions of Java.

XMPP client without OTR in 2014 is not a valid candidate for default messaging application in any distro.
It would be more sane to embed the Pidgin with a bunch of GTK depedencies rather than Telepathy.
Even though it is a great application, it's still more limited than an average Android app and functionality is back in late 90's.
I'm not a coder so I can't follow "don't like it?Write your own" path, but one doesnt have to be a chef to realize, if his food is tasty. This one is not.
I wish I have the knowledge to fork and continue Kopete which is rock solid do-one-thing-and-do-it-well piece of stuff. Kudos to the devs.

KDE Telepathy now has OTR support since version 0.9.

@Zegnat have you or someone checked if kopete-cryptography can be combined with Telepathy?

OTR is good, but PGP is necessary too.

I don’t know. I use neither Kopete nor Telepathy, nor do I use IM services in general. If someone knows Telepathy to support OTR/PGP I urge them to make a pull request and get it on PRISM Break again that way.

I haven't checked but I can almost guarantee you can't.
