ahm, you mean that text editors thinks that bb are pak files because of PACKAGES line. correct?

merge you change = 100% rebuild from all image not good

i never met this bug, but when i think of it, it can be possible on some system configurations:-D

But you can always open the bitbake file in a text editor. You maybe "only" cannot open it by double click. Or am I wrong?

right ... i use mcedit, joe, nano on console to be 100% sure what am i a doing ;-)

There are many instructions in the net to set default application for file types like this:
https://websiteforstudents.com/open-files-with-default-apps-in-ubuntu-17-10-18-04/

And I use geany in most cases. Nice editor expecially for python as you can change size of tabs.
