If I include the git branch info in my prompt theme, the prompt becomes very, very slow (responds in about 2 seconds after input). Can confirm this issue doesn't occur if I take the git_prompt_info call out.

Do your git commands run smooth when you issue them from the your command line?

Yes they are normal.

Can you try to ride my fork in the branch fixing_git? A summary of the stuff I did there can be found here: #2386 - don't believe that it helps, but it's worth a shot.

Didn't seem to help, unfortunately.
On a side note, it is slow on my Mac. It works fine on my red hat install. Could be a git version problem?

Good hint, I am not a Mac user myself but I remember reading about that issue. Is it mavericks? Apples git is said to slow with that, if I remember right. Use homebrew to update git - I'll bet 50 american dollar cent that it will be better afterwards :)

Using the git from brew and the prompt is as fast as before 👍

Hey @ctbear, you owe me 50 cent ;) But I feel generous and will abate your debts - make good use of them in these funds in the future hehe.
